When I was a child, we often made our own playdough. It was fun, easy, and a little bit messy.
Today I am recovering from a little surprise birthday 🎂 getaway my friends planned for me. It was so much fun, but left me slightly unprepared to parent today. Thankfully, I had a few supplies in my cupboard to keep us busy!
- 1 cup flour (whatever kind you have is fine)
- ¼ cup salt
- ½ cup water
- Food coloring
- Mix together the flour and salt.
- Mix together ½ cup of warm water with several drops of food coloring. More drops = brighter playdough.
- Slowly pour the water into the flour mixture, stirring as you pour. Stir until combined, then knead with your hands until the flour is completely absorbed. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour until it doesn’t stick at all.
I gave my kids a few handfuls of playdough and several cooking tools – spoons, spatulas, rolling pin, and cookie cutters. They would have been entertained by anything along these lines.
We made shapes, talked about colors, and tried our hand at measuring. The kids had a blast.
My dogs ate a lot of the playdough, which will be interesting tomorrow. 😖
All in all, it was a fun, easy way to keep little hands busy without having to run to the store or make advance plans.
Hope you’ll give it a try!
